Positionomics: why it’s good to be last

It’s that time of the year again when everyone on campus goes on an application frenzy to secure internships over the Easter and summer vacations. Last week the hot topic was proficiency tests, the tool of choice of companies (especially investment banks) in driving applicants nuts.

This week it’s all about interviews. The lucky ones who made it past the initial barriers to entry and scored an interview now debate furiously over how to ace one - a tie is a must, but will a suit be overdoing it? Is sending a letter of thanks to the interviewer a sign of enthusiasm or a source of irritation? and go whining to the career advisors for help.

My advice: if you really want an edge, ask the economists instead. Turns out there’s a way to increase your chances with minimal effort, and it is as simple as choosing when to be interviewed.
